DO I NEED LIFE INSURANCE?
DO YOU NEED LIFE INSURANCE? IF YOU’RE UNSURE, WE CAN HELP
Not everyone needs life insurance. Yep, it’s true. However, if you have children, a partner, or other relatives that depend on your income to cover the mortgage or other living expenses then life insurance will be a worthwhile investment, as it allows you to carry on providing for your family in the event of your death.
WHAT IS LIFE INSURANCE?
Life insurance cover pays your dependants a tax-free cash lump sum (or as regular payments) in the event that you pass away. Life insurance is designed to provide you and your family with the reassurance and peace of mind that your dependents will be taken care of if you are no longer around to provide for them.
How much will be paid out depends on the level of cover you choose. Essentially, you decide how it is paid out and whether it will cover specific payments such as a mortgage or rent.
It may also be beneficial to consider if receiving a payout will affect any means-tested benefits that your dependents might be eligible for.
TWO MAIN TYPES OF LIFE INSURANCE
There are two main types of life insurance policies:
-
Term life insurance policies: run for a fixed period of time (known as the ‘term’ of your policy) – such as 5, 10 or 25 years. These kinds of policies only pay out if you die during the policy. There’s no lump sum payable at the end of the policy term.
-
A whole-of-life policy: will pay out no matter when you die, as long as you keep up with your premium payments.
WHAT’S NOT COVERED WITH LIFE INSURANCE COVER?
Life insurance usually only covers death. If you are unable to provide for your family due to illness, disability or an accident, you won’t be covered with life insurance. However, you can invest in other insurance products that protect you against these issues including, Critical Illness Cover that protects you against falling critically ill with an illness specified in the policy and Income Protection insurance, that protects you and your wages in the event that you are unable to work.
DO I NEED LIFE INSURANCE?
Life Insurance is worth investing in if you have dependents, a partner that relies on your income or a family living in a house with a mortgage that you pay – as life insurance can provide for them if you die. It might even be worth it if you are self-employed, too as you won’t be able to utilise the benefits that come with being employed when it comes to life insurance.
We know it isn’t a pleasant thought, but in your absence due to death, your mortgage and other household bills will still need to get paid and governments benefits will barely touch the sides of your financial commitments.
If you want to continue to provide for your family in the event that you die, life insurance allows you to do just that.
WHEN YOU DON’T NEED LIFE INSURANCE
You may not need life insurance coverage if you’re single, your partner earns enough for your family to live on, you’re on a low income and could be eligible for state benefits. However, if you’re unsure if life insurance cover is for you, get in touch and we’ll be more than happy to advise you on whether life insurance is or isn’t right for you.
